Painter Painting A Bright Future

There’s no question that the Purdue Boilermakers are coming off a disappointing season. From the early injury to Robbie Hummel to earlier-than-expected exit in the NCAA Tournament, the Boilermakers simply didn’t manage to have the banner year that many fans had hoped for.

The good news is that Hummel is back and the Boilermakers will be able to build around him – as long as his knees hold up. Head coach Matt Painter, who fended off offers from other teams and decided to stay with Purdue, is already on the recruiting trail making sure that the players he puts around Hummel are as talented as can be.

Painter got a commitment from North Central guard Ronnie Johnson, who is the younger brother of Terone Johnson. Terone will be a sophomore with the Boilermakers next season. That now puts Painter’s recruiting class up to four.

College football fans and those betting on NCAA Football props provided by BetUs know that the Boilermakers have far more to be excited about with their basketball team than their football team right now.

There are two major prize prospects remaining on the board: Gary Harris of Hamilton Southeastern and D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera. Smith-Rivera might be a shoe-in for Purdue – or at least they might have an in – because he plays with Johnson at North Central.

In other football news, Painter is rounding out his coaching staff. With only one final spot up for grabs – an assistant position – it looks like Indiana native Greg Gary is going to be pegged for that role. He’s currently a part of Duquesne’s coaching staff. Adding Gary to the staff would simply strengthen the roots to Indiana and if he is in fact the hire, which should be announced later this week, it would mean that every member of the coaching staff has graduated from central Indiana high school.
